Discover Tias Soul

Walking into Tias Soul for the first time felt like stepping into a familiar kitchen where something good was already simmering. The diner sits at 3319 E Holland Rd, Saginaw, MI 48601, United States, and while the building itself is modest, the energy inside is warm and welcoming. I’ve eaten at a lot of neighborhood spots over the years, but this one immediately stood out for how personal the experience felt, from the greeting at the counter to the way the food arrived hot and unapologetically comforting.

The menu leans heavily into classic soul food, the kind that doesn’t rush flavors or rely on shortcuts. During my first visit, I watched the cooks work methodically, seasoning in layers rather than dumping spices all at once. That process matters. According to culinary research published by the Culinary Institute of America, layered seasoning improves depth of flavor and reduces the need for excess salt, which is something you can taste here. The fried chicken had a crisp, well-seasoned crust and meat that stayed juicy all the way to the bone, and the collard greens carried a slow-cooked richness without feeling greasy.

One regular sitting near me said this place reminds him of home cooked meals, and that phrase kept coming back to me as I ate. The mac and cheese wasn’t overly creamy or artificial; instead, it had that baked texture with real cheese pull, something food scientists often attribute to proper protein bonding during baking. The candied yams were tender, lightly spiced, and not drowned in sugar, which shows restraint and confidence in the ingredients.

What really adds credibility to this diner is consistency. I came back a few weeks later with a friend who relies heavily on online reviews before trying new spots. Her plate mirrored my first experience almost exactly, which aligns with what restaurant analysts from the National Restaurant Association say about repeat business being driven by reliable execution rather than novelty. Consistency is hard to fake, and it usually comes from experience behind the stove, not trends on social media.

Reviews from locals often highlight the generous portions and fair pricing, and that checks out. For a diner-style restaurant, the value is strong, especially considering rising food costs nationwide. The USDA reported a steady increase in grocery and meat prices over the past few years, yet this spot has managed to keep its menu accessible without shrinking portions or sacrificing quality. That balance builds trust, especially in a community-focused location like this.

The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious. There’s no scripted hospitality here, just genuine conversation and staff who remember faces. One server explained how certain dishes sell out faster because they’re prepared in limited batches, which is a real-world method used to maintain freshness. While that means you might miss out on a favorite if you arrive late, it also signals that food isn’t sitting under heat lamps all day.

It’s fair to acknowledge limitations. The location isn’t flashy, and the menu doesn’t rotate frequently, so diners looking for constant novelty might feel limited. Still, for people who value flavor, tradition, and reliability, that’s rarely a downside. In fact, food historians often note that soul food is rooted in preservation of technique and taste rather than constant reinvention.

This diner doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead, it focuses on doing a few things really well, and that confidence shows in every plate that leaves the kitchen. From personal experience and repeated visits, it’s clear why the local buzz continues to grow, one satisfied customer at a time.

  • These guys have it figured out. Had a giant spread of their catering at a golf outing, (which I can’t seem to find the menu of but most of what I had is on it) and being a pretty big food critic, there wasn’t one thing I didn’t want more of. I mentioned to others I was with how it’s better than most restaurants that specialize in the certain foods.. Would definitely recommend. Still wondering how I could get my hands on some of the Asian menu they had though..

  • I had been meaning to stop by and try them out but always seemed to come too early. Today I took a late lunch to make sure I could get in. I’ve been liking for catfish for a while and this seemed like the way to go. They opened slightly before noon and promptly took my order. Service was great very polite and inviting. As I was waiting they came out to give me an update on the cook time which was not long to begin with which I appreciated and I watched a worker bring an elderly gentleman’s order out to his table for him I respect that a lot. For the price the plate was heavy easily enough for two people my fish was fried hard and the cheese pull on the Mac was three inches easy. I should’ve known they were about to have me needing a nap when I saw the open Bible on the table when I walked in. That plate was God’s work. I will be back to try more of the menu. Well done

  • I wish I could give it 10 stars ⭐ or as my husband said “10/10 and I’d do it again”! Customer service was fast and friendly. I ordered online with Clover and they made my box when I came in so everything was hot and fresh. I did have a bit of a wait (but I was also late so hey, I didn’t mind lol) As for the food: I put a little hot sauce on the greens and pork chop (out of personal preference), but honestly nothing NEEDED anything extra! Everything was top notch. The pork chop was crispy and juicy. The tips melt in your mouth. The greens were some of the best I’ve ever had (the green beans were comparable when it comes to how juicy and flavorful they are!). Even the cornbread muffins were soft and not at all dry/crumbly like some places I’ve tried. And can we TALK ABOUT THOSE YAMS I could live off of those and those alone! We agree that Tia’s isn’t just a “restaurant”, it felt more like we stopped by a family member’s house to pick up a plate. Can’t wait to go back (edit to add because my husband thought it was pertinent information, but I’m talking about HIS family not mine lol) I would like to add that I do wish they had a “veggie plate” option that was just sides. I had a hard time picking just two and would love the option to just get a plate of maybe 3/4 different sides

  • I ordered over the phone and picked up through the drive-thru, and everything was smooth and easy. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was absolutely worth it! The wings were crispy and seasoned just right, the dressing was rich and comforting, the yams were sweet and buttery, and the greens were tender and full of flavor. You can taste the love and care in every bite. Tia’s Soul Food made me feel like I was sitting at the family table, even though I grabbed mine to go. I’ll definitely be back!

  • If you’re looking for soul food, especially Catfish and Yams. The service was a little slow today, but the food and customer service was top-notch. Anytime I’m in Saginaw, this will be my go to spot.

  • Chicken was superb! Ordered a wing plate and a bbq rib plate. Wings were amazing! Ribs were flavorful but slightly over cooked. Yams ! Macaroni and cheese was solid. Cabbage was overcooked . I prefer cabbage more firm. Sweet tea was super sweet! Dressing was good, slightly over salted. Great place for home cooking! Needed one wing on the wing plate!
